Stacy emailed me this supposedly post mortem photograph of a young child in the hope that I might be able to confirm whether or not it really was a PM.
I am very much just an enthusiastic amateur rather than an expert in this area, but I don’t think I’d have any qualms in declaring this image to be post mortem. As Stacy herself said in her email, the child’s eyes appear to be slightly sunken. Add to that the pose of the head (which would involve some sort of prop) and the fact that it is very clear (it’s not an exact science, but most early photos of children are blurred as they tended to move during the exposure time), and it becomes less and less likely that the poor thing is alive.
The only exception I can think of is if this is a particularly well executed example of ‘hidden mother’ photography. There is a darker area around the baby’s head that could just possibly be the result of early attempts at photo editing.
